Curriculum
Curriculum is the designation used when refering to
any requisite or subject of any course offered by the
American Christian University. ACU's curriculum starts
with the academic pre-requisites for the student registration
in any program. The student must be acquainted with
the pre-requisites of the desired program of study.
To sign-up in some programs that offer certificates,
the academic pre-requisite is to have at least completed
the middle school level, this is for the courses that
offer certificates at the high school level. The minor's
and bachelor's degrees require having completed high
school, master's requires a bachelor's and doctorate's
require a master's degree. The curriculum of each program
that is offered by American Christian University are
described o the "degrees" section, related
to each certificate and diploma available. Other pre-requisite
is that student must provide personal documents in order
to be accepted in any program offered by ACU.
Credit-Hour
Every credit-hour equals to 16 hours. These 16 hours
consist of class through video-conference, research,
participation on the webchat with the instructor and
other students, participation on the discussion pannel,
reports, tests and exams.
Live Teaching
Live Teaching reffers to our online teaching via video-conference.
We consider the interactions via video-conference being
"live" because of the following reasons:
* The perception of corporal language existing during
the interaction between participants in the video-conference.
* The students' visual perception of the material used
by the professors during the classes.
* The possibility of establishing personal conversation
during the classes.
AmidLearning
Platform
The interaction between student, content and teacher
will happen through the e-learning platform named AmidLearning®.
The courses offered through that platform are of entire
responsibility and competence AMERICAN CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY.
AmidLearning is a branch of Amid World Mission, who
is also the holding of the American Christian University.
ACU signed a contract of use of the service of the AmidLearning
platform that establishes limitations and responsibilities.
In this platform, students and professors will have
all the necessary tools to create and fulfill the requirements
of each subject, utilizing an environment of personal
interaction with colleagues and professors, also an
environment of evaluation and an environment of documentary
content and of academic research.
1) Educational philosophy
and Methodology:
The methodology used in the AmidLearning platform, comes
from the educational philosophy that brought forth its
creation. Some important points of this philosophy are:
• Learning is centered on the student.
• The instructor is a facilitator of the learning
process.
• Education, besides transmiting content, should
develop the power and the sensibility of the students'
mind.
• The education should promote alternative visions
of the world and strenght the will of the student to
explore it. Jerome S. Bruner.
• Education should not be "banking education",
but to promote awareness. Paulo Freire.
• Education should teach the use of a prior interpretation
to build a new or revized interpretation of the meaning
of the personal experiences, to guide a future action.
Jack Mezirow.
• Education should instigate on the students attitudes
and habits that will drive learners to the development
of their capabilities of problem solving. John Dewey.
2) Upon registration for classes through the AmidLearning®
educational platform, the student will take classes
by "modules", that is, even if the classes
are a part of a complete course, they will still be
"autonomous". It is only possible to take
a class at a time, only after "graduating"
in the class that the student is taking, that the student
will be able to register in another one.
3) The courses offered through the AmidLearning platform
have a varied number of classes, depending on the area
that the course is being offered.
4) Each class is a "module". The student will
be able to study a module at a time, being required
to finish the module before registering in a new one.
5) Each module will have a responsible professor, which
will be a person that "creates or that supervises"
the class, being available for the students' support
through email and the chatroom.
6)Time of duration and
terms:
• Classes are offered in two distinct ways: 1)
modules may start at any time, that meaning, the beginning
day of any module will be the day the student registers
for it. These modules will have their classes recorded
before-hand, therefore they will be considered “distance
learning subjects”. This way is available for
students who have jobs and that do not have a lot of
time available. The students that take this way, besides
having a professor or facilitador online, they will
also be able to interact with the work and the panels
of arguments of the colleagues that have already finished
the module. 2) Classes with pre-set beginning date.
These classes will be done live via video-conference.
They will be considered "attendance classes".
In the classes with a pre-set date, the students will
have that follow a pre-established rithm of study, with
a marked date for the completion of the class. Begin
with a pre-set date has the advantage of the student
being able to interact live with his/hers colleagues
on the same module and the same time.
3)System of evaluation:
• The tests regarding the modules considered "distance
learning subjects" will be available for the arrangement
of the student. They will be done when the student decide
that he/she is ready to do them. All of the tests will
be taken with time being counted down. Once initiated
the test, the student will not be able to stop it.
• The time estimated for the conclusion of the
module called “attendance classes ” along
with the dates for tests and exams will be up to the
professor to decide.
• The average grade for approval will depend on
the standards dictated by the area in that the student
is studying.
4) Certification them certificates and diplomas will
be emitted by the American Christian University, entity
and user of AmidLearning system.
Directed Studies
Directed Studies are all pre-recorded classes. The decision
of which classes as well as the number of them that
each student can take in the format of Directed Studies
is determined by the direction in charge of each course.
